What the Research Shows About Artificial Turf
A 2024 systematic review in Environmental Health Insights examined 5,673 studies on the human health impact of artificial turf worldwide. The review identified three groups of hazardous chemicals in crumb rubber infill: PAHs, heavy metals, and rubber additives including IARC Group 2A probable carcinogens.
260 young athletes — mostly goalkeepers — have been diagnosed with lymphoma after playing on artificial turf. The EU has banned crumb rubber effective October 2031. PFAS "forever chemicals" have also been found in artificial turf materials, contributing to 12–50% of global microplastic pollution.
