Mommy Makeover
in Austin, TX

Let's be honest, pregnancy takes a toll on a woman's body.

This is especially true for women who've had multiple children or twins. Often after pregnancy, the muscles in the abdomen are unable to return to a youthful, taut position, a problem diet and exercise cannot fix.

Furthermore, the skin has been stretched and the breasts have lost volume and 'perkiness' after breastfeeding. The result is a body that has radically changed in appearance '“ or a mom who is in need of a custom mommy makeover in Austin.

What is a mommy makeover?

A mommy makeover is a blanket term to describe a combination of procedures to re-contour the body. While it typically includes a tummy tuck and cosmetic breast surgery, Dr. Robert Whitfield always approaches each patient from a 360-degree viewpoint. He wants you to be exceptionally pleased with your restored body and plans your procedures to achieve that goal.

Your Mommy Makeover Consultation

When you come to see Dr. Whitfield, the mommy makeover before and after results are completely customized to your personal definition of beauty.

During a mommy makeover consultation, Dr. Whitfield will perform a full physical exam and take great care to listen to your concerns in order to learn which areas of the body are troubling you most in terms of appearance. He will assess:

  • Abdomen skin condition and any stretch marks or saggy areas
  • Quantity of excess fat lodged on the abdomen
  • Breast appearance (saggy, deflated looking, droopy, or lost volume)
  • Nipple size and position on breasts
  • The proportion of your waist to hips and buttocks
  • Condition of underlying muscle structure, whether stretched or split

Additionally, Dr. Whitfield will listen to your individual goals, financial budget for cosmetic surgery, and discuss your lifestyle. Together, you will come up with the best combination of procedures to deliver what you envision for a restored, pre-pregnancy body, or better. No two mommy makeover procedures are exactly alike.

What makes his tummy tuck different from others?

Dr. Whitfield specializes in drainless abdominoplasty, which many women are eligible for except for some limited circumstances.

Skipping surgical drains means that there is a lower risk of post-op infection and much less inconvenience for the patient as there is no need to clean the drains or measure fluid output — a cumbersome task for someone that is recovery from surgery. His tummy tuck procedure also includes the Exparel injection, which is a pain-relief shot that is administered into the abdominal layers toward the end of surgery (while the patient is still comfortably resting under general anesthesia) to significantly relieve pain in the first few days of recovery without relying nearly as much on narcotic pain relievers.

Drainless tummy tuck in a mommy makeover

For some women, Dr. Whitfield performs what is called a drainless tummy tuck. In this procedure, tissue glue can be used to help eliminate the need for a drain. The long-lasting analgesic Exparel is used during surgery to prevent discomfort for up to three days, speeding recovery.

Dr. Whitfield takes these measures to ensure his patients have a safe and healthy recovery after mommy makeover surgery, free of the inconvenience and pain older tummy tuck methods of the past had. With his mommy makeover, patients can get back to daily life and household responsibilities sooner than in the past. This makes getting a tummy tuck or mommy makeover much more practical and accessible for today’s patients.

Cosmetic Breast Surgery

The right breast surgery is going to depend on your individual needs.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Most women who have breastfed multiple children will require a breast lift. Again, the only way to correct loose, sagging skin is with surgical excision of the loose breast skin that is causing saggy breasts. Dr. Whitfield relies on his 20 years of breast lift expertise to select the right breast lift method to best meet the patient’s needs. This may include the lollipop breast lift, doughnut breast lift (periareolar), and in some cases of severe breast sagging, an anchor breast lift. With a breast lift, both upper and lower pole skin tightening can be achieved, resulting in breasts with a perkier, firmer, and more lifted appearance.

Autologous fat transfer

Some patients choose to take fat removal one step further. After excess fat is removed with liposuction, the body fat can be repurposed to add volume to depleted areas of the body that have lost fullness, in particular the breasts. Using your own body fat, the size of the breasts can be subtly enhanced, without the need for artificial implants. Dr. Whitfield may recommend natural fat transfer to subtly enhance breast volume or create a more rounded, pert look to your buttocks as well.

Breast Augmentation (Breast Implants)

If you have also lost volume, then Dr. Whitfield may suggest the addition of a breast implant to restore the plump, rounded look that signals youth. Not all women need implants, but for those that want to restore lost fullness due to empty breasts after breastfeeding, and those that simply desire to increase bust size, today’s soft and natural-looking breast implants can do just that.

Dr. Whitfield understands that each woman’s definition of the ‘ideal breast size’ is different. He takes great care to help you select the breast implant size, shape, texture, and profile that meets your aesthetic goals, while also making reasonable consideration based on your stature and width measurements of the chest wall. Some women may require a custom breast reduction and reshaping. For others who have retained good skin quality, a breast augmentation may be all that's needed to restore lovely, youthful breasts. A breast lift with breast implants may also be performed during the mommy makeover surgery for women that wish to have perkier breasts that are also fuller in appearance and larger in size.

Mommy Makeover Procedures

Tummy Tuck Liposuction

Most women that have had children are going to require a tummy tuck as part of their mommy makeover. It is the only way to repair stretched muscles and remove excess skin and fat over the entire abdomen, delivering the smooth, flat, youthful tummy of your pre-pregnancy days. In the hands of an experienced surgeon such as Dr. Whitfield, the surgical scar will be placed low and is easily hidden, even in a bikini bottom.

A tummy tuck may also get rid of stretch marks after pregnancy if they are located on the area of skin that is removed during the procedure. C-section scars can also be revised, and the overhanging skin on the abdomen at the site of the c-section can be removed. A mommy makeover may include a mini tummy tuck, full tummy tuck, or extended tummy tuck, depending on what you hope to accomplish in terms of loose skin removal.

A mommy makeover may also include liposuction to smooth the contours of the body at the waist, love handles, and thighs, and buttocks. While liposuction is not a substitute for diet or exercise, it is an excellent way to get rid of stubborn pockets of fat virtually anywhere on the body that you desire.

Dr. Whitfield uses time-honored liposuction techniques, which he has perfected over his career as an Austin plastic surgeon. Liposuction puts the finishing touches on any mommy makeover surgery, adding definition to the body and making fatty body parts slimmer in appearance. Performing liposuction during a tummy tuck is even better than having liposuction alone. Removing a moderate amount of fat may result in loose skin in some patients. Since you are already having a tummy tuck surgery, this provides your surgeon with an opportunity to tighten loose skin once the underlying fat is removed. Liposuction is not right for everyone, but for the right candidates, it makes the mommy makeover before and after results even better.

What is the recovery time from a mommy makeover?

Recovery will depend on the procedures performed in your custom mommy makeover, as well as whether Dr. Whitfield needed to repair stretched or split abdominal muscles. This surgical technique will improve the look of a protruding lower abdomen that commonly appears after pregnancy or multiple pregnancies. The abdomen will feel tighter over the first few months following surgery. Most breast and abdominal procedures can be safely combined. Whether or not this is safe for you will be discussed in detail during your initial consultation.

A mommy makeover is typically done under general anesthesia in an accredited surgery center and may or may not require an overnight stay. Although swelling following breast surgery may take in the range of three to six months to fully resolve, most patients will notice a marked improvement at six weeks and are able to get back to normal life in about two weeks after surgery, although you will need to limit vigorous exercise until given the medical okay to do so. Patients can generally begin walking the same day as the procedure, with full upright walking taking place at approximately 10 days post-op. You will have to take a few weeks off driving after mommy makeover surgery until it is safe for you to operate a motor vehicle with a full range of motion. The time off work and driving varies based on the extent of surgery but could be as little as 1 to 2 weeks or more, depending on the type and extent of surgical procedures that have been performed.
