You exercise and stay active. You generally feel happy about your body and how you look. There’s just that one spot…
It happens to us all - stubborn pockets of fat that just don’t seem to be affected by diet or exercise. If this sounds like you, you may be a candidate for liposuction.
During Liposuction Austin plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Whitfield will use a hollow tube called a cannula to remove fat cells from your body. Dr. Whitfield uses liposuction to help Austin patients remove those stubborn fat deposits that resist your best efforts with diet and exercise. Best of all, the results from Liposuction last can last as long as you maintain your good diet and exercise habits.
Liposuction is a body sculpting technique. It is not about weight loss. In fact, most patients do not lose a significant quantity of weight. Liposuction is also known as a body contouring procedure - the goal is more about reshaping your body to fit your goals through strategic fat removal than it is about removing weight. You should be at or near your ideal weight before you consider liposuction.
During your initial consultation for liposuction Austin plastic surgeon Dr. Whitfield will do a full physical exam. He will listen to your desires and discuss your lifestyle. Together you will come up with a body sculpting plan that is best suited for you.
Body contouring with liposuction under local anesthesia can be great for smaller, isolated areas of fat, such as the love handles or bra line. For patients who want to re-contour the entire torso, Dr. Whitfield prefers to perform the procedure under general anesthesia. With this control, Dr. Whitfield can beautifully re-sculpt the waist, abdomen, and flanks.
Dr. Whitfield can also incorporate other procedures to maximize the effectiveness of your Austin liposuction treatment. Combining lipo and BodyTite (or lipo and noninvasive treatments like EVOLVE) can improve skin tightening after liposuction and dramatically increase results. These procedures are done simultaneously with liposuction to maximize the combined effect and contour the desired area to your specifications. Dr. Whitfield recommends these additions whenever possible because of the safety of the procedures and the effectiveness of their results.
In traditional liposuction, fat is removed from the body via a hollow tube called a cannula, which is attached to a suction device called an aspirator.
Laser-assisted lipo uses a modified cannula with a laser at the end to liquefy fat, making it easier for Dr. Whitfield to target fat in specific areas and remove it. This is also known as “SmartLipo.” By liquefying the fat before removing it, laser-assisted lipo boosts collagen production and tightens the skin in the targeted area.
Power-assisted lipo uses a “vibrating cannula” to create an up-and-down motion of the wand while it is inside the body. By doing this, Dr. Whitfield can move the cannula through the body easier and reach more fat in harder to reach places. Power-assisted lipo is perfect for situations like fat transfer, where fat is harvested from one area to be injected into another part of the body.
Ultrasound-assisted lipo uses a pulse of ultrasound energy through a specialized probe to safely break up and remove excess fat. This type of lipo is often used to get fat in areas that are hard to reach through traditional lipo.
Tumescent lipo can be used in combination with just about any other type of liposuction. With this technique, a solution of lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline is injected into the subcutaneous fat in the area to be contoured. This helps to numb the area, making the procedure easy to experience without the need to be put under general anesthesia unless extensive work must be performed.
The volume of the lidocaine causes the fatty area to become swollen and firm, making the fat easier to remove. The tumescent technique not only delivers a safer, better-looking outcome, but there is significantly less post-op bruising. This is a huge plus for all patients as it means that you can more quickly return to your daily life.
While liposuction can be effective alone, Dr. Whitfield may also combine it with another body contouring procedure such as BodyTite, a new radio frequency-assisted lipolysis (RFAL) technique designed to improve skin tightening. In addition, the procedure is often done as part of a mommy makeover or in conjunction with a tummy tuck. BodyTite’s RFAL technology boosts collagen performance and causes the skin to tighten around the affected area. Read more about BodyTite’s innovations on our BodyTite page.
Recovery depends on the patient, the area treated, and the technique used. While most patients can return to their usual activities in just a few days, expect to be bruised and sore for several weeks. You will need to wear a compression garment 24/7 for at least a month. In general, most patients will be back to full physical exercise in four to six weeks – with a more elegant figure, free from excess fat.
