15 Years of Mysterious Illness [Candice Barley’s Breast Implant Illness Story – Part 1]

...more

Within a few months of her first breast augmentation in 2003, Candice Michele Barley began experiencing chronic fatigue. Although she had young children, this was far beyond the usual new mom exhaustion and her doctor dismissed her concerns. The first implant rupture occurred two years later while doing yard work. She had both implants replaced and like many women do when they get a new set, she went a little larger. Almost right away, restless leg syndrome began keeping her awake at night. Two years later while riding a roller coaster at her son’s birthday party, another implant ruptured and sent her back to the operating room for another double replacement. After this surgery, heart palpitations and unusual rashes appeared. Still no one considered these problems could be linked to her breast implants. In 2011, Candice had her 4th breast surgery, swapping saline for the new silicone gel “gummy bear” implants. This was when things really took a turn for the worse. In this first episode of our mini-series about breast implant illness with actress Candice Michele Barley, hear how after many difficult years of trying to fix her health on her own and find answers she made the decision to have her breast implants removed. Breast Implant Illness: Are Your Breast Implants Making You Sick?

...more

Women who believe their implants are making them sick report a wide range of symptoms including extreme fatigue, muscle and joint pain, headache, brain fog, hair loss, rashes, dry mouth and eyes, depression, anxiety, and insomnia. These conditions appear within a few months to several years following surgery, and seem to more often follow a secondary surgery like revision or exchange. But the exact cause is difficult to pin down because other conditions like Lyme disease and toxic mold exposure can cause similar symptoms. Using PCR testing (instead of traditional CLIA-based lab testing), Dr. Rob discovered that over 60% of the breast implants he removed all had one thing in common. Dr. Rob describes his methodology for identifying this complicated, misunderstood condition and shares his treatment strategies utilizing nutrition and genetic testing to put his patients on the path to healing. Breast Implant Illness: Breast Implant Removal Surgery

...more

Because there are so many unknowns for women with breast implant illness, Dr. Whitfield’s approach to each and every breast implant removal surgery is as cautious and precise as the treatment of a breast cancer patient. While performing breast implant removal surgery, or “explant” surgery, Dr. Whitfield does everything possible to keep capsular tissue intact without compromising the shell of the implant. The goals of the procedure are the same, whether the case is a total capsulectomy, a precise total capsulectomy, or an en bloc capsulectomy: to take everything out, as intact as possible. Having cared for thousands of breast patients in his career, Dr. Whitfield has seen it all and knows how risky it can be if something is missed during an explant procedure. By taking all of the material out undisturbed, he ensures a more accurate pathology report at the end of the case. In this episode, hear Dr. Whitfield thoroughly explain the surgical techniques he uses to successfully remove breast implants. Breast Implant Illness: Recovery Following Breast Implant Removal [Part 1]

...more

It’s normal to worry about how you’ll feel waking up after surgery, and if you’re suffering from breast implant illness (BII), you may be even more worried about recovering from those symptoms. Dr. Whitfield goes above and beyond to make the post-op experience as comfortable and painless as possible. He seeks the answers to the difficult questions about what’s causing each individual’s symptoms of BII and continues to care for and follow up with his patients for a full year after explant surgery. Dr. Whitfield’s post-op protocol begins on the night before surgery with anti-nausea medicine, Celebrex to decrease inflammation, and a neuromodulator for anxiety. During surgery, a long-lasting block called Exparel prevents pain and keeps nerves calm for several days. This also minimizes the need for narcotic pain medication, which can make you groggy and cause constipation. If you’ve had an epidural or had this experience from another surgery, you already know why constipation should be avoided! To minimize the risk of infection, Dr. Whitfield does not use drains. Contrary to popular belief, the research shows that drains cause more infections because incisions are exposed to the outside environment and irritated by the drain itself. Lymph nodes are the body’s system for fighting infection, and lymphatic massage is an important step for speeding the healing process along. For this therapy, patients are treated with the Ballancer Pro to flush out toxins, boost the immune system, and shorten recovery time by releasing fluids. Finally, and most importantly, you’ll receive the pathology and PCR test results, which looks at 150 different types of bacteria, fungus, and mold. This episode is part 1 of 2 about the recovery process following breast implant removal surgery. Breast Implant Illness: Recovery Following Breast Implant Removal [Part 2]

...more

In the second half of our two-part series on recovery following breast implant removal surgery, you’ll hear more about how we help patients recover faster from breast implant removal surgery. Because lymph nodes are the body’s primary system for fighting infection, we prioritize lymphatic massage as an important step for speeding the healing process along. For this therapy, patients are cared for by our expert lymphatic massage therapist and treated with the Ballancer Pro to flush out toxins, boost the immune system, and shorten recovery time by releasing fluids. When a fat transfer is included in the surgery to restore volume back into your breasts, the fat is placed between the skin of the breast and above the breast tissue. Dr. Whitfield’s experience caring for thousands of patients over the years ensures that everything he does including fat transfers are safe and do not create issues with future mammograms. Breast Implant Illness: Using Fat to Create Beautiful Breasts After Implant Removal

...more

Whether you’re having your breast implants removed or never had them at all, the volume lost can be replaced with your own fat and beautiful, long-lasting results can be achieved. During a fat transfer, fat is taken out of areas it is unwanted and transferred to different areas where fat is desired. Fat is the perfect filler because it is versatile and able to maintain itself over time. Fat can be used to restore volume, reduce skin laxity, and improve shape, which is one reason why procedures such as the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) have become so popular in recent years. In this episode, Dr. Rob explains the process of fat grafting, including how the procedure is done, the precautions which must be taken to preserve and protect the fat at every point in the process, and how much fat you can expect to retain. Bumps on the Road to Recovery [Candice Barley’s Breast Implant Illness Story – Part 5]

...more

As Candice recovers, her challenges continue. Severe adhesions send her to a doctor for scar release sessions, but incorrect practice of the technique causes the scars to tether back down. Knowing a fat transfer is on the horizon, she searches for the least invasive solution as she has several surgeries under her belt. She finds a doctor who performs non-invasive fat transfers, but he injects way more fat than needed, causing her breasts to swell up and become larger than her implants ever were. When she develops a fever, she makes an emergency trip to California to return to the fat transfer surgeon, which ends with liquidated fat leaking out of her breasts. Dr. Whitfield weighs in on what went wrong, and why fat isn’t something to fear in the hands of a good surgeon. Dr. Berkson’s best health radio

...more

Breast implants are a very popular surgery, especially for re-construction after breast cancer. Dr. Whitfield is an experienced, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who specializes in oncologic breast reconstruction. But he was also the doctor to discover that some cases of autoimmunity, chronic fatigue, cognitive decline… start in contaminated breast implants! Dr. Whitfiled completed six years of surgical training at Indiana University Medical Center. Then a Plastic Surgery Residency. And then a Fellowship in Microsurgery and Aesthetic under Dr. William Zamboni. Dr. Whitfield began to have patients that were experiencing systemic illness, and when he removed their implants, called an “explant” procedure, he found identifiable pathogens in the tissue capsule. Treating these infections got rid of many of these systemic problems, such as chronic fatigue. This lead Dr. Whitfield to start to add more services for his clients, including nutritional and nutraceutical advice as well as personal genetic predisposition screening. Dr. Whitfield has completed over 4000 breast procedures since 2004 including over 500 implant removals. He has the largest series of explant specimens with PCR testing. This tests the genetic sequences of pathogens, so is a highly sensitive test to identify “stealth” infections and find their appropriate medications to eradicate them. While serving as the President Elect of the Research Foundation Dr. Whitfiled also gave testimony at the FDA hearings in 2019 regarding Breast Implant iIlness (BII).

I Never Thought My Implants Were The Problem [Candice Barley’s Breast Implant Illness Story – Part 2]

...more

After many years of research, detoxing on her own, and testing for anything and everything she could think of, Candice finally realized her chronic illnesses were breast implant-related and decided to explant. Just the decision to have surgery made her immediately feel better as she set herself on the path to heal. A few weeks after explant surgery, she finally saw her endocrinologist who was surprised by her new lab results, and canceled the upcoming liver biopsy. The persistent restless leg syndrome she had for 15 years was gone, but other strange (and smelly) things started happening as her body recovered. In this second episode of our mini-series about breast implant illness, hear why Candice has no regrets about this long, strange journey. The Search for a Surgeon Who Would Listen [Candice Barley’s Breast Implant Illness Story – Part 3]

...more

While searching for the best surgeon to first believe her and then remove her breast implants, Candice relied on Yelp reviews and Facebook groups and met with numerous surgeons. Most would agree to take her implants out, but dismissed the possibility that her implants were causing her symptoms. After finding a qualified surgeon who listened to her and understood the importance of removing the entire capsule, she moved forward with a total capsulectomy. Recovery was rough, with an infection caused by drains followed by a fever and a pretty miserable few days. Contrary to common practice, studies show that the use of drains is associated with a higher rate of infection. Hear more from Dr. Whitfield about why drains are not used except for specific circumstances in this third episode covering Candice’s two-decades long ordeal with breast implant illness and her path to healing.
