Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body. It has many uses, including keeping the skin supple, wound healing, creating new cells, tissue regeneration, and is a component in keeping joints mobile and flexible. Injectable hyaluronic acid fillers are a synthetic version of this naturally occurring substance used to plump and fill areas that have lost volume, due to substantial weight loss, or the natural course of aging.
There are definite indications for surgery, which can offer dramatic and permanent results. However, for the early signs of aging, surgery may not yet be indicated. Also, there is also downtime and recovery with surgery, as well as significant cost; if the timing or finances are not optimal, RHA offers a fantastic alternative, providing smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles, restoring volume, and allowing for smoother and more supple skin without surgery.
Both products treat wrinkles, but not in the same way. Neurotoxins work by “freezing” the muscles that cause wrinkles, giving them a smoother appearance, and generally only to the forehead and around the eyes.
However, they cannot treat deep wrinkles in deeper parts of the face, such as the cheeks and smile lines, which require volume to plump them up. RHA helps to temporarily restore this lost volume, which makes the skin appear smoother and younger.
After a seamless check-in, you’ll meet with Dr. Whitfield, who will review your medical and surgical history, what medications you are on, what your skin type is, and what your goals are. Then, Dr. Whitfield will offer his expert advice, and make recommendations. You’ll also receive an individualized cost breakdown of the proposed plan so that you’ll walk away with an accurate and upfront assessment.
Other fillers are currently FDA approved for injection into the lips, cheeks, chin, and smile lines.
On average, most patients will see results for 15 months; without a touch-up, the filler will gradually be absorbed by the body, and the face returns to its pre-injection appearance.
The most common risks of injection are bruising and discomfort at the injection site, both of which are temporary. Infection is rare. More serious complications can include numbness or weakness in the face, arms, or legs, a white or cold appearance of the skin, or changes to vision; these are extremely rare, and these risks are minimized by having a board-certified and highly trained plastic surgeon to perform these injections. If you have a history of Herpes Simplex Virus, consult Dr. Whitfield before receiving RHA treatment.
Yes; unlike neurotoxins, where you simply have to wait until they wear off, there is a reversal agent for Hyaluronic acid fillers, which makes it easily dissolve. It’s also important to remember that an entire syringe does not have to be placed all at once. Having an honest conversation with Dr. Whitfield about your expectations with help to assure happy results with fillers, whether it’s your first time, or you are a seasoned pro.
