Women aren’t the only ones who can develop an excess of breast tissue.

Gynecomastia is the technical term for an abnormal increase of breast tissue in men.

It can develop due to an imbalance in your hormone levels – many men experience levels of gynecomastia during puberty, which typically disappears over time. Since most men prefer a flat, muscular chest, the condition can be debilitating, both physically and emotionally.

What causes gynecomastia?

Many men live excessive breast tissue and fat and cannot wear the clothes that they’d like. In fact, most are so embarrassed that they will never be seen without a loose shirt and avoid working out at the gym due to the condition. They don’t realize that there are fairly simple treatment options to cure this through a gynecomastia surgery in Austin. Dr. Whitfield will investigate the cause of the condition, which can vary:

  • Medications such as steroids, anti-anxiety medications, anti-depressants, and heart medications can cause you to develop the condition.Consumption of recreational drugs and alcohol.
  • Hormonal imbalance.
  • Malnutrition.
  • Health conditions such as hyperthyroidism or the early stages of and liver or kidney failure can lead to the development of excessive breast tissue.
  • Genetics.
  • In many cases the condition is a symptom of aging.

Enlarged male breasts may be due to excess fat, excess breast tissue or a combination of both. In patients whose large breasts are due to fat alone, Dr. Whitfield will perform liposuction. It’s quick, easy and effective. There is minimal downtime although you will need to wear a compression garment for a period of time. For patients who suffer from an excess of breast tissue, the glandular tissue will need to be surgically removed.

How is male breast reduction surgery performed?

In most male breast reduction surgeries, Dr. Whitfield places the incision under the nipple so that the scar is camouflaged. If the size of the nipple needs to also be decreased, he will place the incision around the entire perimeter of the areola. In cases in which there is an excessive amount of breast tissue, he will need to place the incision in the crease under the breast as it is the only way to remove a large amount of volume. He may combine this with liposuction if fat is also creating larger breasts on men. All of this will be discussed in detail during your initial consultation.

What is recovery from gynecomastia surgery like?

Recovery from gynecomastia depends on which treatment Dr. Whitfield performs. Liposuction is fairly simple; the recovery takes a couple of weeks. With a surgical male breast reduction, you can expect to be swollen for about two to four weeks. In both cases, you will need to wear a compression garment for two weeks and avoid any kind of strenuous exercise for that period. Most men return to vigorous activities, including a full regime at the gym in about four to six weeks – with a firm, sculpted, masculine chest area – problem solved.
