When it comes to fighting the early signs of aging, most of us are focused on our face

It’s what we see every day in the mirror – but we may forget that our hands can give away our age.

We talk with our hands, greet people with our hands, and use them to care for each other, clean, type, play an instrument, write and take selfies. Throughout any given day, your hands flex and stretch thousands of times. In short, they take a beating. Hand rejuvenation treatments can help you have younger-looking hands.

Hand damage and the sun’s rays

Unless you wear gloves 24/7, your hands are constantly exposed to the damaging rays of the sun. It isn’t surprising then that the hands can often give away your age even more than the face. As a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Robert Whitfield takes an elegant approach to rejuvenating the appearance of aging hands.

How do you rejuvenate hands?

We use hand rejuvenation in Austin as a procedure or combination of procedures to restore a more youthful look to your hands. It may include topical skincare to improve skin tone and texture, lasers to eradicate sun spots and redness, and injectables such as dermal fillers or fat grafting to hide prominent veins and tendons by restoring youthful volume.

Skincare for hand rejuvenation

The first step that Dr. Whitfield recommends for any patient ism clinical skincare, especially applying sunscreen. Sun damage is the skin’s ultimate enemy. If you don’t think that the sun is taking a toll, simply compare your left hand to your right. Since your left hand tends to rest on the rim of your window when you drive, it will probably have more brown spots, larger pores and thinner texture.

Avoid the sun’s rays.

With sunscreen, it’s important to use one with both UVA and UVB protection that has an SPF of at least 30, with often reapplication. In fact, it’s not a bad idea to use a hand cream with sunscreen so that you get some moisture as well. Moisture also keeps hands in a healthy state. Besides sunscreen, any product that you use on your face to combat aging like Vitamin C and E, glycolic acid and retinols can also improve the skin tone and texture on the hands. During your initial consultation, Dr. Whitfield will discuss which products might be best for your unique needs.

Treating volume loss for hand rejuvenation

Besides skin tone and texture, the biggest in aging hands is the same as that on the face: volume loss.

As we grow older, we lose fat in our hands. It is this loss of plumpness that makes the veins and tendons in the backs of the hands become prominent and ropey-looking. A quick way to reverse this issue and turn back the clock is to restore the lost volume with a hyaluronic acid filler, or with fat transfer. Each has its pros and cons. Dr. Whitfield will discuss which option is best for you, and why, during your initial consultation.

Lasers, peels, and fillers for hand rejuvenation

Since the hands take such a beating from the sun, they are often marred by brown “age” spots. While certain skincare products can definitely improve this discoloration, IPL or intense pulsed light lasers are one of the best procedures for treating sun-damaged skin, fine lines and wrinkles. For certain patients, Dr. Whitfield may even recommend a chemical peel.

Recovery from hand rejuvenation treatments in Austin

None of the procedures that Dr. Whitfield recommends regularly for hand rejuvenation require any significant downtime or planning. The exception is lasers and a chemical peel. Since the skin on your hands will be particularly vulnerable after these treatments, it is best to stay out of the sun for a longer period of time after treatment. With fillers, it is important to keep in mind that it will take two weeks to see the final result. You may experience some slight swelling and bruising. This typically resolves within seven to ten days.
