Overlarge breasts: Breast reduction surgery and your emotional health
Emotionally, overly large breasts can cause women to feel self-conscious; patients often complain about not feeling comfortable in their own skin. Since most women develop their large breasts in puberty – a time that is already fraught with intense emotions – having overly-large, heavy breasts can be particularly devastating, affecting self-confidence for years.
What is a breast reduction?
A breast reduction is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue and skin to reshape and resize the breasts, move the nipple location to a more youthful position on the front of the breast, and create lovely, rounded breasts that are in proportion with your body. It is a complex surgical procedure that requires exceptional skill and an eye for balance and natural beauty. You can trust Dr. Whitfield to be meticulous in technique, and to work closely with you to achieve results that exceed your expectations.
What is my first step in breast reduction surgery?
During a private consultation, Dr. Whitfield will examine your breast tissue, evaluate skin laxity, measure the position of your nipple in relation to the inframammary fold (beneath the breast), and discuss your vision for smaller breasts. His goal is to determine the best method for achieving your ideal breast size – one that balanced and in proportion with your figure.
Your unique anatomy will determine the appropriate incision placement. The incision placement options for a breast reduction are the same as a breast lift:
- Periareolar, or around the nipple
- Lollipop, around the nipple and vertically on the lower portion of the breast
- Anchor, around the nipple, vertically down the lower breast and in the breast fold
The appropriate incision will be chosen based upon degree of skin laxity and the quantity of excess breast volume that needs to be reduced.
What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction surgery has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates of any cosmetic procedure. Imagine being free of the weight of heavy breasts – the increase in your quality of life, comfort, and confidence can be out the roof. After a breast reduction, patients are able to return to all forms of exercise without pain.
They can wear low-cut tops and skimpy bathing suits with total confidence. Many women who have always had a hunched-over posture to try to hide large breasts now stand tall, exuding confidence and self-assurance. Both emotionally and physically, a breast reduction is a transformational surgery.
Will I have visible scars from breast reduction surgery?
While scars are part of breast reduction surgery, incisions on the breast heal exceptionally well. To achieve the best results, we can provide various very effective scar treatment options to help reduce any significant scarring on the breasts. Scar therapy with Embrace is FDA-approved and is utilized by Dr. Whitfield after breast surgery to reduce the appearance of scars. In any case, the incision lines will fade, and are hidden within even the most revealing clothing.
When will my breasts look normal after breast reduction surgery?
While it may take from six to twelve months to achieve final results, most patients will notice a remarkable change at six weeks after surgery. Your scars, however, may take up to a year to fully mature, so you will need to be patient.
