Why Do Breasts Sag?

The causes of breast sagging may vary. One of the most common reasons for drooping breasts that have a flattened appearance is the effects that pregnancy has on the body.
Breast size increases during pregnancy for many women due to putting on weight during gestation, as well as an increase in bust size due to the hormones that cause lactation for breastfeeding purposes. After giving birth, the breasts may decrease in size and fullness. However, the skin has already been stretched - sometimes irreparably - leaving the breasts looking saggy and deflated.

The effects of weight gain followed by weight loss take a similar toll on the breasts. Once the fat is gone due to diet, exercise, or weight loss surgery, the skin is loose and the breasts appear empty. Finally, nearly all women experience aging skin at some point, often starting around age 30. Skin loses elasticity and structural collagen, causing heavy breast tissue to sag as a result of gravity’s demands over time. Other women have drooping breasts or nipples that point downward as a matter of genetics. All of these concerns can be easily corrected with a one-day breast lift surgery with Dr. Whitfield, an experienced Austin breast lift surgeon.

Experience matters with Breast Lifts

Austin plastic surgeon, Dr. Robert Whitfield has been successfully performing breast lifts for over 20 years. He is passionate about helping women feel great about their bodies after the effects of pregnancy, breastfeeding, major weight loss, and aging have made the breast skin undesirably loose. The breast lift procedure, also called a mastopexy, is technically challenging.
To achieve a superior outcome requires an exceptional level of both artistry and surgical skill. In breast lift surgery, experience matters above all. Dr. Whitfield's skill and training allow him to design and create beautiful, rounded, youthful breasts that will enhance your figure, with any scars placed as discreetly as possible, so they can be hidden even in revealing clothing or bras. While a breast lift can be performed alone, Dr. Whitfield will often combine it with a fat transfer for those patients who want more volume, or as one of the procedures in a custom mommy makeover.

Where will the incisions be in a breast lift?

During your breast lift consultation, Dr. Whitfield will assess your breast tissue, skin laxity, nipple position in relation to the inframammary (beneath the breast) fold, and your desired outcome. His goal is to give you the best breast for your body and create the least amount of scarring.
  • Periareolar

The most common breast lift incision placement that Dr. Whitfield performs is the periareolar incision, placed around the nipple. He prefers this approach because it helps conceal the scar and leaves the visual appearance of the breast undisturbed. This breast lift technique is also known as the “doughnut breast lift” or “donut breast lift”, due to the round shape of the incision around the areola.

While scarring and incisions are minimal compared to the other breast lift techniques that are used by surgeons, the only downside is that not all patients are a good candidate for this type of breast lift. When there is more severe sagging of the breast tissue and other cosmetic problems of the breast, a different and slightly more invasive approach may be required in order to achieve the patient’s desired outcome.

Dr. Whitfield strives to use the most minimally invasive approach possible when it is deemed appropriate in order to reduce the size of breast lift scarring that remains on the breast after full recovery is made. To find out if you are a good candidate for the periareolar breast lift technique, please schedule a private consultation with Dr. Whitfield for a personal evaluation.
  • Anchor

For patients with a large degree of excess skin that needs to be removed, Dr. Whitfield will use an anchor incision that adds a scar underneath the fold of the breast. While this breast lift method produces the most noticeable breast lift scars, many women find it well worth it to have the perkier breasts they desire when they are struggling daily with severe breast sagging that affects how they feel about themselves and look in clothes.

Your surgeon places a rounded incision around the areola complex, then continues the incision in a straight line down to the breast crease. Then, a horizontal incision is made under the breast, following the natural curve of the breast crease. This allows your surgeon to remove a large amount of loose breast skin in a single procedure, providing the dramatic lifting effect you desire on both the upper and lower pole of the breast. The incision resembles the shape of a boat anchor, and the scars are expected to fade substantially in just 1 to 2 years after the procedure.
  • Lollipop

Patients that require more of a lift on the upper pole of the breast (top portion of the breast), may benefit from the lollipop technique. A lollipop incision is made around the areola and is then vertically extended downward in a straight line toward the lower section of the breast, ending at the breast fold. The shape of the breast lift incision in this method resembles a lollipop, with a round circle around the nipple and a long, straight line heading down the center of the breast beneath it.

Combined Breast Lift & Fat Transfer Surgery

For many, a breast lift alone is enough to restore the breasts. For other women, the breasts may have lost considerable volume with time, and now droop and sag, lower on the chest wall. Some people take the opportunity to finally have larger breasts - something they may have wanted for years. Dr. Whitfield often combines a breast lift with a Fat Transfer. All of this will be discussed with you in detail during your consultation.

Recovery From a Breast Lift: What Should I Expect?

In cases where breast lift surgeon, Dr. Whitfield only removes excess skin, the recovery from a breast lift is pretty quick and takes only one to two weeks. If he has had to remove considerable breast tissue then your recovery will be longer, which can range from two to six weeks.

Every person heals at a varying rate. Dr. Whitfield will recommend a supporting bra to wear during your recovery, as well as scar therapy based on the type of incision required in your breast lift. Most women find an incision heals surprisingly well on the breasts.
