Arm lift procedures – what’s right for you?
Dr. Robert Whitfield offers his patients a full range of arm lift procedures. These include arm lift surgery (also known as brachioplasty), liposuction, and a new, cutting edge radio frequency therapy called BodyTite™. Each procedure has its pros and cons and your arm slimming treatment will be custom-tailored to achieve results. Determining the right one for you is going to depend on a number of factors.
During your arm lift consultation, Dr. Whitfield will examine your arms to assess the skin quality, skin laxity and quantity of excess fat and tissue. He will listen closely to what you hope to achieve. His goal in every consultation is to advise you of the most effective way to achieve the desired outcome.
Arm lift or brachioplasty surgery – what is it?
If you have lost a considerable amount of weight, you are more than likely going to need a surgical arm lift. A brachioplasty is the only procedure that addresses both sagging skin and fat. During arm lift surgery, Dr. Whitfield places an incision along the mid-portion of the upper arm or in the armpit. He then lifts and removes the excess skin, removes the excess fat with liposuction, and carefully closes the incision, leaving a slimmer, more attractive, youthful look to the upper arms.
Arm lift with Liposuction
If the skin quality is still good but there is excess fat in the upper arms, Dr. Whitfield will perform an arm lift with liposuction alone. Liposuction is a great tool for re-contouring the upper arms. Dr. Whitfield will first inject the treatment area with a tumescent solution of saline, lidocaine and epinephrine. This helps decrease bleeding, a technique to dramatically reduces post op bruising.
He then removes the fat with a traditional or power assisted device. For isolated areas, this is done under local anesthesia in the office. For multiple areas or in conjunction with other procedures, the procedure is performed at a surgery center.
Benefits of arm lift with liposuction
The benefit of an arm lift with liposuction alone is dramatically less scarring. The downside is that it will not address loose skin, a primary concern for many people. For patients who have excess fat and a mild degree of skin laxity, Dr. Whitfield will often combine an arm lift with liposuction and BodyTite™, a new radio frequency treatment that significantly tightens loose skin.
Arm lift with BodyTite™
BodyTite™ is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure that uses RFAL, or Radio Frequency Assisted Lipolysis. In an arm lift with BodyTite™, a probe is inserted through 2mm or 3mm openings in the upper arm. It then heats both the skin and underlying tissues to safely melt away the fat, which is subsequently removed with liposuction. If loose skin is the only issue, reduction with liposuction is unnecessary, further simplifying the procedure. Skin is further tightened by the addition of radiofrequency microneedling with Fractora or Morpheus8.
Benefits of an arm lift with BodyTite™
The benefits of a BodyTite™ arm lift include:
- Fast treatment, only eight to fifteen minutes to complete.
- Little to no downtime.
- Minimal scarring – incision sites only ½ inch long.
The procedure is only aimed at certain patients as it cannot address large volumes of fat or excessively loose skin. For the right patient, Dr. Whitfield believes an arm lift with BodyTite™ is a game changer.

What is the recovery time after an arm lift?
The recovery time for an arm lift with BodyTite™ alone is minimal. With either a brachioplasty or an arm lift with liposuction, you will wear a compression garment for about four to six weeks to help reduce post op discomfort and swelling.
Although your final results may take up to 6 months, you should notice an improvement in the appearance of your arms within one to two weeks, as the swelling decreases. This varies depending on each patient and the amount of swelling and combination of treatments performed.
